What’s On Your Nightstand? – January 2018

This is one of my favorite link ups that I have always taken part in.  I couldn’t not blog and read and not join in with everyone at 5 Minutes for Books.  It occurs the last Tuesday of every month.  You share what you have been reading, what is still hanging out on your nightstand, and what you plan to read if you like.

It was a nice long month to get some good reads in.  IF it hadn’t taken so long to get through Thomas Hardy I would have completed more actual books!  Instead I managed to get 7 audio books and 3 actual books.  Because some of the books I had scheduled to read later like, Hitchhiker’s Guide, came available before I was expecting them to, I’m somewhat out of order to start the year.  Hopefully I will get back on track soon.

For the month of January I have listened to or read : (each title has a link to my review)

The Book of Deacon by Joseph R. Lallo
This Life I Live by Rory Feek
 The Chosen by Ted Dekker
The Great Convergence by Joseph R. Lallo
The Mayor of Caterbridge by Thomas Hardy
Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom
The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway
I Heard The Owl Call My Name by Margaret Craven

I’m currently reading/listening to:

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Biography by William Anderson (for the LIW Challenge)

What’s hanging out on my nightstand?

West from Home: letters of Laura Ingalls Wilder – San Francisco 1915

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

This month I started another blog just for book reviews.  That being one of the biggest things I began blogging for I thought I would get back to attempting writing reviews to recommend books to my friends.  I’m not the best but I hope that the more I do it the better I will get.  Each book will be linked to that blog book review.

For the month of November I have listened to:

What’s On Your Nightstand? – October 2017

I haven’t completed a lot of books in October because the one book that I actually picked up was over 900 pages!  Because I have always enjoyed Halloween I picked up an old Anne Rice novel… It was as good as I remembered it and it didn’t scare me to death!
For the month of October I have listened to:
A short story from part of the actual Divergent series.  Gives more detail and insight on the character Four.
Of course we all know that this is a prequal to The Lord of the Rings.  It seems to always make more sense when you reat the prequal.  (as in the Star Wars books!)
This was a great little story about a father and daughter who made a promise to read for 100 nights and it just didn’t seem right to stop so they continued for over 3000 nights!
This was a story about an little girl and her wonderful Grandmother.  Grandmothers aren’t always the best “mothers” as this book comes to show (and I know that of myself!).  Not what I expected it to be but I liked it.

A good murder mystery solved by a detective, medical examiner, journalist, and prosecuting attorney… All women who formed a club to solve this murder.  It was pretty good.  Had some language in it that might offend but it was “real”.
 I’m currently reading/listening to:
So far I haven’t figured out where this story is leading.  Hope it picks up soon.
Still working on this one…It’s taken me all month!
What’s hanging out on my nightstand?

Another slow month but I have achieved my Goodreads goal of 35.  I hope to make it 50 by the end of the year.  Not to put too much pressure on though.  This is the last Summer nightstand post!  Where has the time gone!?
For the month of May I have listened to:
The Memory Keeper’s Daughter was a sad read.  A bad decision that affected so many lives.
Just a short story about one character in the Divergent series…
This one had me kind of confused in the beginning.  It kept switching from one group of people to another.  I finally caught on.
A lot of good information but a lot to take in.
This one had been on my TBR list for way too long.  It was a bit strange.  Had quite a bit of language.  But over all an intriguing story.

I’m currently reading:

Tabled!
I think I started this one too soon.  I have too many books going.  I will dig into this one very soon.
What’s hanging out on my nightstand?

This has not been a great month of reading for me.  But then I knew once summer arrived my reading would slow down… A LOT!
For the month of May I have listened to:
I finished this one after my Nightstand post in June.  My first Grisham novel.  It was pretty good but way longer than it should have been.  I may try another one just to see if it was this one novel or if all his writings are like that.
The Two Towers.  Listening to these books has helped me to understand the movies a bit more.  Apparently I can’t sit still long enough to watch an entire movie and I missed some important details.

I’m still reading:

I may have to table this one.  I am not getting much time at work to read.  My breaks are quick so I can get back to my desk. {{sigh}}
What I am currently reading/listening to:
I have not started anything else yet.  I just don’t have time right now.
What’s hanging out on my nightstand?
I’m on a Non-Fiction kick right now.  My soul and brain are so thirsty!

Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman’s Soul by John Eldredge (can’t wait to get to this one)

I hope to get better with actual books.  I’ve been doing a lot of audio books lately because I am always doing something else.  Like knitting or coloring, pattern searching, planning…
For the month of May I have listened to:
Was a nice little story.  Oh the innocense of children is so refreshing these days!
I wasn’t really impressed with this one.  It made be somewhat paranoid; like everyone around me is “controlling me”!
I had never heard of this one before.  It was a good little read about good and evil.

I’m still reading (but almost done):

Taking me longer than I had hoped but it’s awesome.  I am giving it to everyone I know that has little boys! First my daughter with two step son’s.
This one will take a long time.  I read it on my lunch break at work and that is it.
What I am currently reading/listening to:
A (Christian) co-worker said he loved John Grisham books.  I had never read one so I thought I would give it a shot.  It’s a very detailed story to say the least.  I sometimes drift off with some of the details.
What’s hanging out on my nightstand?
I’m on a Non-Fiction kick right now.  My soul and brain are so thirsty!

Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman’s Soul by John Eldredge (can’t wait to get to this one)

What’s On Your Nightstand? – May 2017

I hope to get better with actual books.  I’ve been doing a lot of audio books lately because I am always doing something else.  Like knitting or coloring, pattern searching, planning…

For the month of May I have listened to:

The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien.  It was a very animated audio version so it kept me entertained while driving to and from work.  I have seen the movies but enjoyed the reading nonetheless.

Flight of the Sparrow by Amy Belding Brown  Some of this was hard to listen to but then it was a liberating story!

Still Alice by Lisa Genova  A story about a middle aged Harvard Professor who develops Alzheimer’s. She believes at first she is starting to go through menopause but after testing she is diagnosed with this awful disease.

I have read:

The Gifts of Imperfection by Berne Brown.  This one took me some time as it was a serious matter to me.  In my quest to “Find Me” this has been wonderful in helping me to let go of what everyone expected me to be or do or think or say… you get the point I’m sure.
I would recommend this for everyone.  It’s enlightening to say the least.
The Beginner’s Goodbye by Anne Tyler about a grieving widower who is an editor at a family publishing house adds to a series of books they put out for Beginner’s at everything… You know like knitting for dummies… same concept.
What I am currently reading/listening to:
This is another one that may take me some time.
A light read to go along with my deeper read (above selection)
What’s hanging out on my nightstand?

The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey

The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan

WOYN – November 2016

It’s time again to link up and share our reading progress with everyone at 5 Minutes for Books!  Come on over and join in on the party! 🙂Nightstand

I continue to camp out on The Psalms.  I opened a bible study on Song of Solomon but have not picked it up in a few days.  My page count for November looks pretty impressive but remember, I don’t count them until I have finished the book… which a couple took me a very long time.  I am thinking that after the first of the year I am going to cut back on my reading and pick up my knitting more.  I am still very short of my Classics Club Challenge but what can I say, I’m itching to improve my knitting! 🙂

If it hadn’t been for audio books I would not have gotten anything done this month.  The one book I did read was a very short one.  One that had been on my classic list for a very long time…

I have also picked up on my Bible reading which I have forgotten to include in my nightstand postings.  The Psalms are a wonderful read that brings peace and comfort to my soul.

WOYN – August 2016 (Update)

Nightstand

UPDATE:  so I posted a week early… I forgot that we had changed to the last Tuesday of the month.  SOOOO, I have once small update.  (almost two…)

I missed doing a July nightstand post because of my break so the books that I have “completed” are since my June post.  It was a busy month off so I didn’t get to lay around and read.  Who really ever gets to do that?   There are some big books I have had on my list and I am finally getting to the end of them.  I’m looking forward to a short read now and then! LOL!  I’m linking up with 5 Minutes for Books to share my reading progress this month.

Completed:

A Measure of Mercy by Lauraine Snelling

Catch 22 by Joseph Heller

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince by J. K. Rowling

The Apostle: A Life of Paul by John Pollock

On my nightstand:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow by J. K. Rowling  (book) (I’m so close to being done with this one I almost counted it as completed… but I won’t)

1001 Arabian Nights by Anonymous

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

Up next:

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

I’m not really sure.  I’d just like to see how it goes for a while.  I do need to get more of my classics completed.  Next July is my 5 year 100 book challenge completion date.  I don’t really see that happening.  I think I still have about 40 books to go and they aren’t short ones!

Nightstand

I’m late!  I just got busy with our Memorial Weekend trip and totally forgot to get this post ready to share with friends at 5 Minutes for Books.  It was a nice long month, don’t you think?  Even though it was longer I still didn’t get all the reading done that I needed to.  Could be the glorious weather and the fact that I just want to be out in it after sitting at my desk all day.  It’s been a busy month around here as you know if you’ve ready my Week In Review post each week.  So, my reading has been feverish the second half of the month… Trying to get caught up!

Completed:

Water for Elephants by Sue Gruen

The First Phone Call From Heaven by Mitch Albom

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J. K. Rowling

On my nightstand:

Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert

What’s next?  I supposes I will continue with the Harry Potter series.
